Thursday the 10th of February saw an event at ZERO CARBON Guildford focussed on promoting the effectiveness of climate hubs in facilitating behavioural change with residents in Surrey

Promoted by ZCG and Surrey Climate Commission, the event was live and virtual, and despite only 20 -30 being at the Hub a further 100 or so were online.

Firstly, we heard from trustee of ZCG, Ben McCallan, who explained how the hub had started, and now runs as a charity, running many events for many different parts of the local community.

Operating a wonderful space in a prime retail location in the centre of Guildford the Hub is really making its prescence felt.

The hub trend, however, is happening all over Surrey and we then heard from Talking Tree in Staines, What Next in Godalming, an environmental community space in Walton-on Thames and the experience of Dorking Climate Emergency in setting up a temporary hub in Leatherhead.

The speakers were able to express what works in engaging people on the ground. We were also able to identify common barriers and areas of frustration. One such area was the need for constant support, both from a resource point of view, and with effective messaging and policy coming from Government.

We at Surrey Climate Commission can play an important conduit role between central strategy and what really works on the ground.
