Sustainable Development & Climate Change post COVID Roundtable

Surrey Chambers held the above event in collaboration with Wilton Park a networking part of the Foreign and Colonial Development Office. They are holding a number of these events around the Country to gauge how National and International Policy can have a positive impact on Local Climate Action.

A number of business stakeholders were on the zoom event, stating their views on how local climate action could be more supportive to their operations.  

Some of the main messages included;

Commission supports GasNetNew Consortium

Surrey Climate Commission have provided a letter of support  to a consortium  called GasNetNew, comprising of experts from the University of Surrey, Nottingham, Loughborough, and Birmingham. The Consortium are applying to the The Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council, EPSRC to fund a project that will investigate possibilities for using the existing gas network to supply innovative low-carbon heating/cooling solutions to homes and businesses in the UK.

Leading Scientists call for Oath for Climate

Leading climate scientists , including the Surrey Climate Commission's own Patron, Professor Chris Rapley, have asked fellow scientists and researchers to join them in making an                       

Oath for the Climate.

Noting the increasing severity of the global heating crisis and the need for action that transcends election cycles they are asking that this oath can be a pledge of scrutiny, integrity and engagement.

Surrey Climate Commission Develop Action Readiness Assessment

The Commission have developed a Readiness Assessment that allows us to assess how ready certain climate saving activities/projects are

when measured against important criteria, such as Technical Capacity, availability of Policy, Financial and Community Readiness, and its ability

to be delivered. Adopting a process that has been successfully used by Leeds Climate Commission the Assessment 

uses a traffic light and scoring system to measure readiness. This will not only help identify those sectors  that are ready for project development and funding

The DFT have now issued an updated newsletter explaining the findings from submissions as well as deliberative research carried out.

This will be a pre-cursor to the constructing of various policies and a Transport Plan.

New report urges banks to support just transition to a sustainable and inclusive economy in wake of pandemic

Banks need to work with the government to create a new and more resilient model of prosperity that will enable the UK to build back better in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, according to a report  published today (July 14th) by the Grantham Research Institute on Climate Change and the Environment at the London School of Economics and Political Science.

Surrey Climate Commission get funding from PCAN

It was confirmed last week we will receive funding from PCAN (The Place-based Climate Action Network).

The funding will help the Commission to meet it's objectives of stimulating and coordinating  more effective action in making Surrey a zero carbon County. 

Our Bid entitled “Developing Effective Climate Policy in a Multi-Authority Local Area'  also promises to offer a useful blueprint to other counties that wish to follow Surrey's lead.
