Respond by 5 August to consultation about Local Government reorganisation

Central government is consulting on local government reorganisation in Surrey.

The Surrey Climate Commission welcomes a review of governance, but – given the climate crisis – argues broader change is needed. We call for climate action to be made a statutory duty at local level with adequate resource. Community engagement and participation is essential to meet the challenges of climate change. Effective climate action must be multi-level, through matrix governance from nation to neighbourhood.

What should local government reorganisation look like in Surrey? Make sure your community has its say by 5 August. Government is keen to hear Surrey’s views and has launched a consultation.  Three unitaries have been proposed by most of the districts and boroughs.

Commission Convenes Panel for Surrey’s Climate Delivery Plan

Following the initial 5-year Plan set in 2020, the Greener Futures Team at Surrey County Council needs to review and redefine this Plan for the next 5 years, between 2026 and 2031. The need to review has come even more into focus with the forthcoming Local Government Reorganisation on the horizon. With a new over-riding Strategic Authority needing to be in place by 2026, it is more important than ever that a robust, but ambitious plan is in place, when new priorities are set.

New tool for community groups

An online platform for community group volunteers has been created by the Surrey Climate Commission. The Surrey Climate e-Forum is an easy-to-use platform providing a space to share advice and tips on everything, from finding funds and recruiting volunteers, to engaging more members of your community, and securing CIC or charity status, and much more. It’s great for getting answers to your questions, quickly and easily. There's already lots of content from experts across the community group sector in Surrey.

Volunteering opportunities with the Surrey Climate Commission

The Commission is expanding its reach and is looking for volunteers to help. From recruiting more community groups to the network, writing and managing the monthly e-newsletter, to designing and delivering training to community groups, and raising funds for the Surrey Climate Commission CIC, there are many roles to choose from. Annual Community Group Survey: results now in!

Over 50 Surrey community groups active on the climate completed our annual survey. The survey showed that over 130,000 Surrey residents are reached by these groups, through a combination of newsletters, stalls, posters and through social media.

The groups are active across many different sectors: 58% are working on biodiversity projects, 44% in education, 38% are involved in waste reduction, 34% health and wellbeing, 32% of groups are working on energy, 30% on food, on transport and on water quality, and 22% on air quality.
