Climate Forums for key stakeholders

Two Climate Forums were held on consecutive days in November to gauge people's views on what they felt the key areas were in tackling climate change in Surrey.

A healthy mix of individuals was invited from across the private, public and citizen sectors. They were also asked what practices they were carrying out at present and what role the Climate Commission could make in the future.

Government approves 2nd Gatwick runway

The Secretary of State for Transport has decided to approve Gatwick Airport’s Development Consent Order (DCO) for its Northern Runway project.  This means the Government is supporting a second operational runway, leading to a huge increase in Gatwick’s annual flight numbers and significantly increasing environmental damage from the airport’s operations.  We regard this as an irresponsible decision that waves aside climate science, environmental evidence, and the interests of local communities.  This flawed decision will lead to worse noise and air pollution, traffic congestion, rail crowdin

Home Energy 'One-Stop Shop' PLUS Switch Together group-buying scheme launched

Surrey County Council is helping residents with energy saving measures again this winter. Are homes in your area in need of insulation, solar panels, and air source heat pumps? If so, the One-Stop Shop will support residents in your area to access a comprehensive home survey, trusted installers, and impartial end-to-end support. The first 120 eligible homes can access 20% off the cost of a Home Energy Plan from trusted partners Furbnow and 30% off Furbnow's project support fee if they proceed to install any of the recommended measures.

HEAT Plus is looking for a few local groups and venues to partner with to deliver regular drop-ins for Surrey residents. If your community runs regular events or your local community group would like to add home energy advice to your offering then please contact Mel at the Surrey Climate Commission for more information.

Solar farms and biodiversity

Solar farms have the potential to increase biodiversity, a Royal Holloway University of London Research Report has found. One of the report’s case studies, the Southill Energy Community Solar Farm, attained biodiversity net gains of up to 70%. Situated in in the Cotswolds National Landscape Area, the community's Solar Farm substantially surpassed the pre-existing biodiversity standards.
